May Justus, born in a remote area of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, went on to be an educator and a celebrated author of children's books. She lived through four wars, the Great Depression, the nascent labor movement, and the civil rights movement. She was beloved by her students and readers, and she worked side-by-side with people from farmers and miners to Eleanor Roosevelt and the leaders of great social change. Her upbringing, her love of education, her faith and her sense of fairness; these values informed her work and inspire us even now. This book is a work of historical fiction.
